Oppy named “Best Managed” for 12th year

Oppy named “Best Managed” for 12th year running

VANCOUVER, B.C. —  Of the 20 years that the Canada’s Best Managed Companies have been honored, Oppy has been chosen for the last 12, making it one of the longest-standing organizations in the program.

The full-service produce marketer first achieved the “Best Managed” honor in 2001, and has re-qualified annually ever since. The award selection involves a meticulous assessment process which is overseen by sponsors Deloitte, CIBC Commercial Banking, The National Post, MacKay CEO Forums and Queen’s School of Business. The recognition reflects the previous year’s performance.

“A dozen years is a long time for any company to perform at the top of its game,” said John Anderson, Oppy’s chairman, president and CEO. “It’s an honor to be recognized again among the best. It’s a testament to our strategy, and the growers and customers who help us bring it to life. But most of all, it is earned by our people, who deliver on our expect the world from us promise day in and day out.”

Canada’s Best Managed Companies program recognizes Canadian organizations that have implemented world class business practices and created value in innovative ways. Applications are reviewed by an independent judging panel that evaluates how companies address various business challenges, including new technologies, globalization, brand management, leadership, leveraging and developing core competencies, designing information systems and hiring the right talent to facilitate growth.

Not only is Oppy celebrating its 12th “Best Managed” recognition, it has earned the prestigious national award’s Platinum Club member status for the fifth consecutive year. This honor is reserved for organizations that continue to qualify after six years in a row.

Anderson notes that it was particularly gratifying to earn the recognition in a year marked by economic turmoil, unexpected weather events, and unfavorable exchange rates — which for Oppy meant blending rigorous disciplines with a flexible business approach.

“I am very proud of our team for tackling daily challenges by implementing innovative solutions and constantly adding value,” he said. “Their leadership in the company and the industry makes it possible for us to be recognized among the best yet again.”
