The Opportunity
Are you a results-driven accounting professional with a passion for leadership and fostering a collaborative approach? We are seeking a skilled, team-oriented Accounting Manager (known internally as “Grower Accounting Manager”) who will play a pivotal role in overseeing and managing our grower accounting functions across North America. This leadership position is responsible for the financial management of complex grower accounts, including account setup, reporting, payments, and finalizing the growing season.
You’ll collaborate with various departments to ensure smooth deal administration, streamline processes, maintain compliance, and support operational goals. By leveraging data insights and best practices, you’ll align team efforts with organizational objectives, improve efficiency, and drive continuous improvement.
As a key leader, you will foster a high-performing, collaborative team environment, setting clear expectations and training/mentoring team members to unlock their full potential. Additionally, you will spearhead initiatives to refine workflows, implement strategic projects, and adapt to the evolving needs of the business. In this role, you’ll champion a culture of growth, integrity, and operational excellence.
Please Note: In-office attendance is required for the first 6-months of training and the position may be eligible for a hybrid schedule following the training period depending on team needs.
Responsibilities
- Leads and develops a high-performing team of grower accountants across North America, fostering a positive, collaborative, and results-driven work environment. Sets clear expectations, mentors and trains team members, and ensures alignment with Oppy’s culture and organizational objectives.
- Implements and oversees grower accounting, reporting, and administrative practices and procedures. Monitors and evaluates procedures to ensure alignment with company policies, compliance standards (SOX), and operational best practices.
- Partners with category directors, Accounting & Finance leaders, and other departments to determine optimal workload distribution across grower accounting teams, ensuring operational efficiency and resource alignment to meet business needs.
- Administers assigned deals in line with company standards and ensures processes support operational and strategic objectives. Reviews staff productivity and workload balance, reallocating tasks as needed to optimize support for category teams.
- Analyzes business trends and key performance indicators to inform decision-making and ensure the grower accounting team delivers results aligned with organizational goals. Leverages data to optimize allocation, streamline workflows.
- Collaborates with the Category Financial Analysis team regularly and more frequently during peak periods to prepare grower-related financial forecasts and operating plans. Ensures the team is equipped with the necessary training and tools to excel in financial modeling and forecasting tasks.
- Manages the Trouble File Team Lead and team to provide strategic guidance and address complex issues, such as produce loss claims or credit-related challenges. Collaborates with sales leadership to evaluate root causes and contributes to process improvements.
- Provides day-to-day support for other in-office A&F team members, including accounts payable, in support of the Director Corporate Accounting & Finance. Collaborates with other leaders across the function to ensure efficient operations and facilitate teamwork and a positive work environment.
- Aligns team resources with the evolving needs of the business, ensuring flexibility and proactive adaptation to changing priorities or market conditions.
- Identifies opportunities to improve office efficiency, enhance workflows, and strengthen communication within and between departments. Leads or participates in cross-functional projects, including LEAN initiatives, to drive continuous improvement.
- Leads efforts to refine and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) that enhance operational consistency and efficiency. Ensures alignment with organizational objectives and compliance requirements.
Required Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and internal controls, with proven experience managing and ensuring compliance with SOX, GAAP and Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, and Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.), with the ability to leverage computer accounting systems for complex reporting, financial data analysis, and scenario modeling.
- Advanced knowledge of PACA, USDA regulations, and other related produce industry regulations and standards in both Canada and the US.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, with a proven ability to mentor, train, and inspire team members while fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment. Experienced and passionate about team development including designing and delivering effective training programs to ensure team members are well-versed in accounting policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication (written & verbal) skills, with a track record of building and maintaining positive relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and leadership at all organizational levels.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with a proven ability to resolve complex issues, make sound decisions under pressure, and implement effective solutions that align with organizational objectives.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to handle complex information and deliver precise, high-quality results under tight deadlines.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism, with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement, with a proactive approach to identifying and implementing process efficiencies, system enhancements, and operational best practices.
- Positive and engaging attitude, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and fun working environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field; a combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum, 5 – 7 years of experience in financial management, grower accounting, or similar functions within a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Minimum 5 years supervisory experience, with proven success in building and maintaining a highly-functioning positive team environment.
- Experience within the produce or agriculture industry an asset.
- Professional accounting designation (CMA, CPA, or equivalent) is highly preferred.
