While overseeing all Canadian sales initiatives, Walt also directs our citrus category in Canada, concentrating on mandarin oranges grown in Japan, Korea and China.
Walt was a produce buyer for Woodward’s in Vancouver, British Columbia for 10 years before joining Oppy to sell California-grown produce to our customers throughout Western Canada in 1987. Walt's marketing role grew and he added New Zealand pipfruit, kiwifruit and other imported and domestic produce to his portfolio. He was promoted to sales manager in 1997, opened our Calgary, Alberta sales office four years later and established Oppy’s Toronto office in 2012. He was instrumental in bringing the first Japanese square watermelon to Canada in 2002.
Walt has served as chairman of the Canadian Produce Marketing Association and is also the past president and former director of the British Columbia Produce Marketing Association (BCPMA). In 2016, Walt became the face of Oppy on social media by hosting popular monthly episodes of “What’s Fresh at Oppy?”, which showcase our current offerings and encourages fresh produce consumption. In November 2019, Walt was recognized as the BCPMA produce person of the year, for his outstanding long service to the industry.
